Groundhog Control

Most animal pests are classified as pests due to their destructive nature and resistance to typical control methods. Certain animals will even have state or local laws protecting them, significantly narrowing the control options available for a homeowner or business owner. Because they are animals and not insects, these pests also tend to have a higher evasion rate; sometimes they can squirm out of traps or survive after ingesting a bit of poison. One of these evasive creatures is the groundhog, also known as a land-beaver or woodchuck. They also belong to the marmot family, which includes yellow-bellied and hoary marmots. Unlike their marmot brothers, groundhogs are more indigenous to low-elevation areas. The vast forest clearing happening in recent years is only adding to their favor, giving these pests more places to inhabit.

Groundhog Behavior

Contrary to popular belief, groundhogs are actually related to the squirrel, not the mouse or rat. Consequently, they also happen to be the largest members of this family, growing up to 30 inches and weighing about 4 to 9 pounds. Although their limbs are short, groundhogs’ limbs are strong and highly effective at digging. Therefore, one of the biggest problems they cause is numerous burrows and holes. For a gardener in particular, this troublesome hobby can destroy multiple crop beds and soil in general, making it impossible to replant anything near the entrance of the groundhog holes. In addition, groundhogs are also mostly herbivorous and mainly eat vegetation. As a result, they pose double the trouble to gardeners because they destroy soil and consume plants. Groundhogs will also consume other insects that are harmful to plants, but they favor plants and therefore wreak havoc more than they help out.

Because they are members of the squirrel family, groundhogs also hibernate for the winter. They will create an entirely separate burrow just for hibernation and remain there from about October to March or April (sometimes less, depending on the region). When one may attempt to chase out or attack a groundhog, it may simply swim away or dash up a tree. One reason why they are particularly annoying to eliminate is their “alarm” system; there will always be at least one groundhog on guard duty while the others are eating and, if it detects danger, it will make a whistling sound to warn the others.

How to Get Rid of Groundhogs

Thankfully, Pest Mall conducted its research and is aware of all the difficulties accompanying groundhog control. Therefore, we provide a series of high-quality products that should effectively eliminate these unwanted guests from your yard or garden. If groundhogs have not yet invaded the yard or garden, one can apply a repellent around the perimeter of the designated area to prevent any of these pests from entering in the first place. In addition, copper mesh can be stuffed into vents and other narrow places to halt the creatures in their paths. On the other hand, if groundhogs have already penetrated into one’s property, there are several different control methods available. If one wishes to utilize a more humane method, Pest Mall offers live animal traps that can be set up with bait and concealed in areas with high groundhog traffic. Glue traps will also immobilize the pests, though there is a chance that they could die of starvation or dehydration on the traps. A popular control tool appears to be gas bombs which can be placed directly into groundhog burrows to suffocate and kill them. These bombs, called Giant Destroyers, can be deposited into burrow entrances then covered with dirt for a discreet killing effect. Whichever method a homeowner may choose, if used correctly and in a sufficient amount, destructive groundhogs should no longer be a problem.

Q. How do you avoid killing bunny rabbits that may be in the hole??
I have a baby bunny and at least five adult bunny rabbits that are in my yard. I want to place some sore of repellent in the burrow, but I don't want to harm the bunny rabbits. any suggestions? Do rabbits live in the burrow too? I can never tell where they go?
A.  The only thing available for use that is not harmful for rabbits is the live animal traps. Some rabbits do live in the burrow, but most collect bedding to make a nest.

Q. i have an established groundhog problem. the one known hole comes up in my fenced-in vegetable garden. i have not located another hole, but there is lots of groundhog sightings around my shed. unfortunately i can not see if a hole is there. the shed is about 200 feet from the vegetable garden. if i put a giant bomb in the garden opening, will it reach the shed? and if the gas escapes the shed hole, do i have to worry about neighbors? i have trapped 2 so far this year using apples as bait , but i know there are many more. and they will wipe out my vegetable garden, again!!! what should i do!!!?
A.  It is difficult to state how far the giant destroyer can reach because each burrow is made differently. The best thing to do is block the hole after placing a giant destroyer into each hole. Even if the gas escapes the hole, you do not have to worry about neighbors.

Q. I have groundhog(s) under my screened-in back porch. The floor of my porch are 2x4's with spaces between. I cannot get under my porch without pulling up the boards. Will your smoke bombs work with the air circulation that's involved? I do have an area rug covering most of the floor. I could cover most of the openings. What's your opinion??
A.  You will definitely be able to smell the odor of the Giant Destroyers if used under your back porch. It is not labeled nor recommended for that use.

Q. We have several holes in a large field and do not know what holes to block off would the smoke bombs work or what would you recommend?
Do you need to be licsensed for these products?
A.  You should insert the Giant Destroyer Bombs in burrows that seem like it has the most recent activity (recently excavated soil). You can check to see if the burrow has activity by removing the soil plug from the entrance of the burrow and checking the following day to see if it has plugged up again. You should treat all active mounds. The entire product label must be thoroughly reviewed before the use of the Giant Destroyer Bombs. Q. I now see gray squirrels going in and out of a hole in the foundation of my shed. Do they "take over" when a burrow is deserted by a woodchuck??
A.  Squirrels are able to invade vacant burrows unless it is destroyed and uninhabitable. To get rid of ground burrowing mammals like squirrels, we recommend using Giant Destroyers. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact us again.

Q. how can i get rid of woodchucks that have made a home under my deck??
My deck is closed in and we cannot see under it unless I pick up all the boards. This past month, I notice my foundation in my attached sunroom has shifted, causing the baseboard to be 2" higher than the floor in one corner. Could this be caused by them and how can I get rid of these awful critters. I am sure they are in hibernation now, so can I set a kill trap at each entrance hoping they come out in the spring and enter into the trap.
A.  We apologize, but we are unable to give you a definitive answer. It may be possible that the woodchucks are lifting your structure but we cannot say that it is true without inspection. We definitely recommend that you hire a professional to at least inspect the structure to determine the cause of your structural problem. You can set traps out although, like you said, they will not be caught until after hibernation is over. You can also use a smoke treatment, but you will have to vacate the house and ventilate upon return. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact us again.

Q. Desposing of Groundhog?
There is a possible groundhog that has made its burrough underneath my home. My home is a rambler, and is located on a concrete slab. I believe it is a groundhog, because of the constant loud scratching sound that I hear from time to time. My question: Would it be feasible for me to use the gas bomb, due to the fact that the ground hog is located around or underneath my home?
A.  You can use a gas bomb like the Giant Destroyers as long as the house is vacant for a few hours while the gas permeates through the tunnels and above ground. Upon return to the house, we recommend ventilating the space for at least an hour.

Q. I have a ground hog living in the crawl space of my home. I don't want to trap it, so what should I use to get rid of it? ?
I want to kill this ground hog. He is under my home destroying my duct work! Please help. Thanks!
A.  Groundhogs that are under the house are difficult to get rid of and it is unsafe to use the smoke destroyers unless you are able to vacate your home for at least one day. We recommend hiring a professional to go and get rid of the groundhog. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact us again.

Just advised you above of our situation Digging under around the home to access under the home! VERY PERSISTENT
A.  Another route you can take to exterminate the Ground Hogs would be to use live traps. It would help to bait the live traps for faster catch.

Q. I was considering hooking a hose to the exhaust pipe of my car, & then putting other end into entrance of burrow for the "silent but deadly" treatment.... would this work? ?
A.  To be honest, I'm not sure if that would work, or how safe it would be for our environment. However we do carry an item with the similar "silent but deadly" treatment idea called Giant Destroyer Smoke Bombs.

Q. Will dogs (or electronic dog barking) deter groundhogs??
A.  Live dogs may have a greater effect in deterring the groundhogs in the area compared to an electronic dog barking system because they can cause a physical treat. However there are no grantees in the effectiveness of both methods.
